So many times we tell ourselves we’re not good enough to get what we want. So many times we think that’ll never happen to us, we’re not lucky or work hard enough.
Last week I got selected for a job that I thought was out of reach. I competed against the entire company’s applicants, not just a regional position. I went against our entire company’s pool of talent, and managed to obtain it. I originally thought I was just competing locally, so to even be selected for an interview was an honor really.
After my interview, I prayed that whatever happens makes me stronger as a person. I thought my interview wasn’t strong enough. I gave it my all, but I’ve been told before I was just second place. I wasn’t upset; just knew I had to sharpen my skills. This interview was my first time testing them against the company.
I had faith I was a strong applicant, but I didn’t know who I was up against. I can usually size out my competition, but I was flying blind this time. It was intimidating to say the least, but I knew I had to try.
I was in shock when I got the call I’d been selected. I was elated to know my efforts had paid off and put me in first.
I have succeeded at many things during my life, but this was something I didn’t foresee me achieving. I knew I’d get my degree, I had faith I’d commission; I didn’t know I’d get a National position in my company before 30.
Don’t tell yourself you’re not good enough, don’t let your negative thoughts control your future. Let your feet move you forward and keep positive. You might just surprise yourself, and hit the stars you were reaching for. Like my dad said, “Keep rucking, one boot in front of the other, you’ll make it. Just remember to put foot powder in your boots and tape your feet before you start.”
Prepare yourself, be realistic, but also be optimistic. Don’t doubt yourself. Your body can take a lot more than your mind lets you believe.
