Work arounds

Work arounds

I recently just faced the hardest class of my masters program so far… managerial economics.

I asked the guidance counselor when I was choosing my program if I’d be ok with the courses involved in an MBA with my concentration, and he mentioned that I should be fine. No prerequisites were required and I should be able to pass no problem.

So I started this class not expecting it’d be anymore difficult than my other classes had been. Boy was I wrong. I only took one economics class in my life, and that was back in high school, almost 11 years ago. This class barreled right into the topics and I had to hit the ground running.

I tried reading the textbook (which I never really have to) and it was like trying to translate Chinese into English. It was a horrible read and I do not recommend anyone using it for future classes. The first couple assignments, I didn’t score very high on. I’m used to getting 95 or above on assignments and I was pulling 70-75s.

See the problem is with my employer, they are currently paying for my schooling, as long as I score above an 80 in the classes. At the rate I was going, it didn’t look like I would be able to achieve an 80. I started freaking out because I didn’t have an extra $1600 for the class just laying around.

Luckily, I used my brain and thought about how I could still learn the content without having to use the book. I researched and found YouTube videos that explained each topic and was able to understand the concepts that way.

In the end, I made an 87%, B+! I’ll take it!! Better than not having to pay for the class. That class definitely taught me to think outside of the box. You don’t have to follow the other exactly as long as you get to where you’re going. You can veer off a bit, as long as you have the destination in your brain and you find a way there.
